Communal strife over immersion of idols
Lucknow: One person was killed and nine others, including six policemen, injured in clashes between police and a group in Sant Kabir Nagar on October 24. The group had laid siege to the Bakhira police station following a dispute over the immersion of idols of goddess Durga. Police opened fire when the mob tried to set the police station on fire following rumours that policemen were trying to immerse some idols in the morning which could not be done last night, the Inspector-General of police, Rameshwar Dayal said.
Nearly 50 persons have been arrested for rioting, additional police force and three companies of PAC have been sent from Gorakhpur to the affected area. The station officer of the Bakhira police station, Hersewak Shukla has been suspended following clashes between two communities.
In a separate incident in Bhadohi, 12 persons were injured and many shops set afire after clashes between two groups during the idol immersion procession in Kotwali area of the district. The police said that the two groups clashed on October 23 night during the procession, resulting in arson and violence. Twelve shops and four vehicles, including the Distirict Magistrate’s car, were damaged.
