Obituaries

Famous scholar and religious leader of Kashmir, MAULANA GHULAM AMHAD AHRAR died in Srinagar after a prolonged illness. Jammu & Kashmir minister for tourism, Ghulam Hasan Meer expressed deep sorrow over his death. In his condolence message Meer praised his services for presenting the teachings and lofty principles of Islam in true perspective. As teacher he rendered valuable services in imparting religious and scientific education to youths of the new generation.

Well-known municipal and social worker and journalist of Salimpur JAMEEL AHMAD SIDDIQUI died of heart attack in Jama Masjid area on 29 August. He was associated with Aljamiat, Babul Uloom and many other oganisations.

Former president and founder member of Al Mahmood Society, Madanpura, AL HAJ ABDUL AZEEM died in Varanasi on 22 August. A condolence meeting was held by the society in which speakers expressed great shock over his death and described it as a great loss to the society.

Freedom fighter and senior Congress leader of Delhi, Mahboob Ali Zia died of heart attack on 30 August in Delhi. Just a few days ago he complained of chest pain and was admitted to Heart Institute where he died. He was 90 and is survived by five sons and two daughters. He was buried in Delhi Gate graveyard.

A prayer meeting to commemorate the 22nd death anniversary of MUFTI ATIQUR RAHMAN USMANI, great freedom fighter, relgious scholar and founder of the journal Burhaan was held in Delhi on 26 August in which religious, political and national leaders paid rich tributes to his social and religious services. Famous poet Anand Mohan Zutshi Gulzar Dehlwi, representative of Delhi’s social and literary life, presided over the meeting. 

Prominent religious scholar, ‘natiya’ poet and distinguished teacher, MAULANA SHABNAM KAMALI SITAMADHI died on 19 August in Patna after a brief illness. Condelence meetings were held in many cities including Delhi where in a message Shahid Siddiqui, MP said that after Maulana Ali Mian Nadwi, Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasmi and others, his death is another big tragedy. It may be noted that he was honoured with presidential award in the year 2000 for excellent teaching services.
