2 dead in communal clash
New Delhi: Communal riots recently broke out in Veraval town of Gujarat. A Jamiatul Ulama delegation headed by its general secretary, Maulana Mahmood Madni, toured the affected areas to assess the damages and to sympathise with the the victims. Maulana Madni said that the riots were pre-planned and news media presented the riots in a totally destorted manner.
Disputing media reports that a Muslim youth’s teasing a Hindu girl started the riots, he said that Yusuf, 35, a simple and upright person was passing through a girls high school. A teacher of the school accosted him and asked his name and started beating him without any reason. Somehow he was rescued and taken to his home.
However, rumour-mongers and communal elements exploited the situation and soon communal riots broke out in many localities. Looting and arson started. Two persons died and 200 shops were set on fire. Most of the shops belonged to Muslims. At least four mosques and 10 dargahs including the dargah of Haji Wali Saheb were razed. Copies of the Qur’an were burnt and desecrated.
Jamiatul Ulama has demanded judicial as well as CBI inquiry into the riots. Maulana Madni also announced reconstruction of some smaller shops as a relief measure.
