Indian Muslims centre at Hamdard
Syed Shahabuddin sent the following letter to Siraj Husain, VC, Jamia Hamdard:
I learnt from the Milli Gazette about the establishment of the Centre for Studies on Indian Muslims in your University with the eminent scholar Yoginder Sikand as its head. I welcome it and wish it every success and I look forward to the publication of the proposed Directories of Scholars working on and of Research Theses, related to the contemporary situation of Muslims in the country.
There is a tendency to concentrate on English and Urdu literature on Muslim Indians. To cover the optimum spectrum and trajectory of Islam in India, I suggest the Centre should have in due course, scholars who can access and monitor publications in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Assamese and Tamil.
The emphasis should be not only on how Muslim Indians see themselves but also on how other Indians see them.
