Punjab told to pay compensation
New Delhi: The NHRC in a landmark judgement on November 11 held the Punjab government liable for the death of 109 persons in the police custody. The commission asked the state government to pay compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh each to the next of the victims’ kin. The half of the compensation has to be paid directly to the next of kin and the rest kept in the fixed deposits for five years. The next of the kin of the victims can draw interest on the fixed deposits. The NHRC is hearing the case to consider grant of compensation to the victims on an order of the Supreme Court.
