Jamia Millia Islamia students union
New Delhi: The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) may soon have a students union. A committee set up to look into the union issue has submitted a report on the structure and functions of the new union to Jamia vice-chancellor Prof. Mushirul Hasan. After his approval the report would be sent to academic council for its consent and after its sanction the new students union may be set up.
The committee has recommended to elect a president, a vice-president, a secretary and joint secretary and to form a cabinet of the elected representatives from faculties. The need for representatives from faculties has been justified on the ground that each faculty has some issues and problems. The committee has endorsed some criteria of educational qualification to keep mischief-mongers out of the union. One of the recommendations of the committee is that only senior students of post-graduate level course and those who have studied at least one year at the university should contest elections for the posts of president and vice president.
The JMI students union was scrapped seven years ago after violence and disruption of academic schedule due to students’ strikes.
