REJOINDERS

Urdu University

This refers to the reports of UP Government’s decision to set up a separate Urdu University. Many are sceptical about the intention of this move; they are of the view that the proposed university won’t serve purpose. The ultimate result of this decision will be further aloofness of Muslims from the mainstream. The failure of Indian Muslims on every front can be traced in syllabi and curricula they had adopted from the time of Mughals. It continued to exist even after the fall of the Mughals. Because of the confrontationist attitude of Muslims towards British, they fought against everything that was dubbed as British. The result: the birth of a downwardly mobile community that even today occupies an unenviable place in the areas that are considered to be symbols of pride. Further, the proposed Urdu university will add fuel to fire. Given the anti-English attitude of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the medium of teaching in the university will be none other than Urdu. And English will be kept away from the classrooms. Subsequently, the students who pass out the courses offered by the Urdu university will sweat to find a placement in job sector and they won’t suit for the world outside. And in a world of hatred, favouritism and nepotism, the certificate-holders of Urdu university will, no doubt, be discriminated against.
