Award for Zakaria
Mumbai: Dr Rafiq Zakaria, internationally acclaimed scholar of politics and Islam, has been honoured with the National Integration Award by the National Commission of Minorities on November 21, reports our special correspondent.
The award is in recognition of the proactive role he played in spreading communal harmony in India for over six decades. The award ceremony will be held at New Delhi on December 18, on the occasion of the UN Minorities Day.
Dr Zakaria said, "It is good to receive the award since it goes on to show that whatever work I have done and all the effort I have put in for so many years have been recognised." He also said that the award is particularly relevant in present-day India as the country was passing through a phase of communal unrest, following the riots in Gujarat and attempts at disturbing the national fabric.
"This award is a good gesture to promote national integrity, which might have received some severe blows in the recent past. Although people do rarely involve themselves in such work for awards, recognition from one's fellow countrymen and peers is always welcome," he added. With over 20 books to his credit, Dr Zakaria is also a recognised educationist, an experienced administrator and an authority on Islam.
