Meaning of cultural nationalism

In your editorial of 1-15 March, 2004, you have mentioned the joint statement of RSS-JUH on the talks. I have a feeling that perhaps you have not seen the text which is not limited to the concept of a common nationhood but extends to the idea of a common culture. As you are aware in the RSS parlance, cultural nationalism means Hindu nationalism.

In our view, India is multi-religious and multi-cultural and the Muslim community will never surrender to the historic process of assimilation in the Hindu fold, in the name of religion or culture. Apart from anything else, the RSS-JUH dialogue was ill-timed because its purpose of the RSS was to confuse the Muslim community and to demonstrate that the Muslims do not regard the RSS as anti-Islamic or as hostile in any way. I had issued a statement on 19.1.2004 on the occasion., which I attach for your information.
