The Ugly American by William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick was first published in 1958. It was an expose of American incompetence and arrogance. It painted a picture of how the US blunders in the struggle with communism in Southeast Asia. In 1963 a movie made from the book was released starring Marlon Brando, but no lessons were learnt and Uncle Sam started his Vietnam misadventure the very same year. The US moved on from one fiasco to another in Beirut, Mogadishu, Afghanistan and now Iraq. The Ugly American of 1958 is today The Stupid Ugly American.

America’s Public Cause Network has just named George W. DUH-bya' Bush, Jr. ‘The Ugliest American' for his fanatic zeal in bringing the world to new heights of international discord and quite literally, to ‘the eve of destruction' for the world as we know it. The runners-up are DUH-bya's ‘supporting cast': Dick ‘Oil Slick Dick' Cheney and Condoleeza ‘Cold War Condi' Rice for their behind-the-scenes efforts, Donald ‘Rummy' Rumsfeld for his administrative efforts, Paul ‘Super-Hawk' Wolfowitz for his in-fighting, and Colin ‘Waffle' Powell for his obfuscation efforts.  «
