18 accued in Best Bakery case

Vadodra: Eighteen persons accused in the Best Bakery case, who were earlier released on bail by a Gujarat court, are on the run ever since the Supreme Court in its verdict of 12 April cancelled their bail and ordered retrial of the case in a Maharahtra court. Following Supreme Court's directives, a fast-track court issued on April 21 a non-bailable warrant against the accused.

Vadodra police commissioner SK Sinha said that a special five-member team has been constituted to track down the accused. This team has been authorised to visit any part of the country to arrest them. Two of the 21 accused in the Best Bakery case were arrested earlier from Hanuman Tikri area.

Gujarat government had filed an appeal with the apex court to review its order transferring the case to a Maharashtra court but this was rejected by the apex court on 7 May describing the application as “abuse of the process of the court” and described it as “false and misleading”. The apex court also rejected Gujarat government’s plea to strike down its earlier remarks in the 12 April verdict about Modi government as “modern day Neros”.
