|Efforts to ease educated Muslim girls woes
Milli Gazette Online
Ahmedabad: Many educated Muslim girls remain unmarried for want of "suitable" boys. To solve this problem, Muslim organisations in the city have come up with the idea of promoting higher education among boys by granting them scholarship, uniforms and books free of cost. And as a first step Sarkhej Area Welfare Organisations’ Federation has been set up to look into the problem and finding its solution.
Though state census data shows that Muslim males have higher literacy than the females, 69.64 percent versus 53.63 percent. The boys are more literate, but in terms of higher education the girls are ahead, said Mehrunissa Desai, president of Ahmedabad Muslim Women’s Association.
The issue of falling ratio of educated Muslim boys was discussed at a seminar in Juhapura locality of the city in February. Ibrahim Sheikh, trustee of Lokhit Seva Trust hinting at 250 graduate women attending the seminar said that it would have been tougher to get 250 graduate men. Today, when the Gujarat State Waqf Board felicitates bright students from the Muslim community in Ahmedabad, 75 per cent of them are girls.
Ibrahim cited example of his own daughter for whom he was facing difficulty in finding a suitable match. He has seen at least 20 bachelors for his post graduate daughter but none of them had studied beyond Std. XII.
