| Spat between Azam and Bukhari over Urdu
University
By
Masood Hasan
The
Milli Gazette Online
Lucknow: Describing the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Ahmad Bukhari as an illiterate person, the Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Minister and a firebrand Muslim leader Azam Khan had refused to respond to the comment made by the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Ahmad Buhari against him. The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Ahmad Bukhari had commented during his Lucknow visit that Azam Khan was the main hurdle to the establishment of the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University in Uttar Pradesh. But later reacting sharply to the comment made by Ahmad Bukhari, the Urban Development Minister has suggested the Imam of Jama Masjid remain within his limits because he was merely a servant of the Delhi Waqf Board. Azam Khan said that Ahmad Bukhari had no right to talk about the welfare of the Muslims as he is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and is working as an agent of the BJP. Azam Khan pointed out that Ahmad Bukhari had always worked to weaken and divide the Muslims for his personal gains.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister who was talking to newsmen in Lucknow, after the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party boycotted the proceedings of the Assembly, he said that Ahamad Bukhari had divorced his first wife but she has a son and the son is the real heir. His wife who is divorced is living in Moradabad, he said adding that in the light of Islamic jurisprudence, the son of the first wife is the real heir. The son is studying in a foreign country. Azam Khan has fired another salvo at Ahmad Bukhari and sarcastically said that the Imam should form a party of Muslims at the time of the elections so that fund could be generated easily and the Muslims could be divided to benefit the
BJP.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister and a prominent Muslim leader who is taking a keen interest in the establishment of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University proposed to be set up in Rampur is very dismayed over the deeds and role of the Congress. Azam Khan told newsmen that the Congress Party did not like the word "Maulana" so some amendment was proposed and the word of Maulana was deleted from the University. He has alleged that the Congress hates the word "Maulana" and the word "Maulana" has been deleted and the Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University would be established under a trust that would be run by the private sector. The Bill to set up the Urdu University is awaiting the approval of the Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeswar. The political parties, including the Congress leaders particularly the state president Salman Khursheed, had strongly objected to the name of Azam Khan as the pro-chancellor of the University for life giving rise to new controversy. Earlier the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had decided to allow the Urdu University to be run by the private sector paving the way for its establishment in Rampur soon. The state government had done this because it could not get the approval from the governor despite the bill being passed by the state legislature. The state cabinet has also decided to table the motion in the session of the Assembly and a trust would be set up which would chalk out its plan. The government had passed a Bill in the last session of the Assembly making Azam Khan the pro-chancellor for life of the proposed university.
