Hamdard’s 7th convocation
Jamia
Hamdard, Delhi’s youngest university, held its seventh convocation on 14 January, chaired by former prime
minister IK Gujral. The highlight of the ceremony was award of an honorary doctorate in literature to the known Islamic scholar Asghar Ali Engineer, who according to the citation, “has been a source of inspiration to a large number of Indians committed to the cause of security, equity, secularism and progress for all sections of Indian Society.”
Aryavaidyan P K Warrier of the Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, was also conferred upon an honorary doctorate in science for his role in the revival and revitalization of Ayurveda.

Addressing the Jamia Hamdard convocation, Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, said that health and education are among the important goals of UPA government’s common minimum programme and Jamia Hamdard was rendering valuable services in these fields. He called upon the students to work for the spread of education among poor in northern states particularly UP and Bihar where Muslims are in large numbers. Arjun Singh paid glowing tributes to late Hakeem Abul Hameed, the founder of Hamdard group of educational and medical institutions. |
Chief Guest Mr Arjun Singh, Union HRD minister, in his convocation address said: "Education and Health are the two key concerns in our national Common Minimum Programme. That both fields are equally emphasized at Jamia Hamdard, is a tribute to the farsighted vision of Hakeem Abdul Hameed- a model of self - reliance for the nation as a whole."
A total of 559 students were awarded degrees and the first rankers the gold medals for their outstanding achievements in academics. Degrees awarded included 15 PhDs, five M.Phils, 22 MAs and 256 BA/B.Sc degrees. Arjun Singh distributed 30 gold medals among students who had secured distinctions in various subjects.
Siraj Hussain, Vice Chancellor, presented a brief report highlighting the activities, achievements and future plans of the University. Hussain apprised about the contributions of Jamia Hamdard to the scientific development of the country through numerous research projects sponsored by the scientific departments of Govt. of India. The university has been engaged in a continuous process of development in terms of infrastructure, research and development.
Saiyid Hamid, Chancellor, presided over the function. Mr Abdul Mueed, President, Hamdard National Foundation, graced the occasion.
Jamia Hamdard, an 'A' grade University accredited by NAAC, is one of the leading institutions of higher technical education and research in the country. The University offers short term courses to PhD programme in Allied Health Sciences,
Islamic Studies and Social Sciences, Management Studies and Information Technology, Medicine (Unani), Nursing, Pharmacy, Science and Distance Learning.
