Meerut: Sulekh Kumar, a BJP leader and the main accused in
Meerut’s Nigar Cinema
carnage, where the Muslims watching cinema were selectively killed, in 1991 was shot dead on 5 January here. He was exonerated of the charges during previous BJP regime in UP, and elected a corporator on BJP ticket in the Meerut municipality. He was shot when he was in the campus of a building under construction near Gandhi Ashram by two unidentified persons.
Superintendent of Police, Meerut city, Dr Arvind Kumar said that a police team had been searching the assailants and added that Sulekh himself was a history-sheeter. He was complicit in the murder one Atul, a relative of the former BJP-MLA from Meerut Cantt., Amit Aggarwal. After the Nigar Cinema carnage he dodged the police for a long time. Meanwhile when BJP came to power in UP the murder case against him was withdrawn and her wife brought in politics.
