Bollywood super star Shah Rukh Khan has been nominated for this year’s Padma Shri award after his name was cleared by awards committee and sent to PM’ office. He is probably the youngest winner of this award. His name was proposed for this award last year also but rejected. He is now actively mobilising funds for helping Tsunami victims and has arranged Rs 1.15 crore for PM’s relief fund. The industrialist, Azim Premji has been selected for Padma Bhushan Award. 

Maulana Sayyad Nizamuddin, Ameer-e Shariat has been honoured with Senior Citizen Award by Free Thinkers Association, Patna. Patron of this Association is Uttaranchal chief minister N.D. Tiwari and Bihar University Vice Chancellor of Patna University is the president of this Association. Maulana Nizamuddin has been selected for this award in recognition of his long and active social service. The award consists of a medal, a shawl and commendation certificate. 

Raees Ahmad Siddiqui, incharge of All India Radio Urdu programme has been honoured with Electronic Media (Urdu) Award for 2004 by Delhi Urdu Academy in recognition of his 21 years of distinguished services to Urdu. This is the fourth such award in this field during the 24 years of Delhi Urdu Academy. The award consists of Rs 21,000 in cash, a shield, and a Commendation Certificate.

Film actress Waheeda Rahman has been honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award. Another Lifetime Achievement Award winner is film director Shakti Samant. The awards were presented to them for their extraordinary skills in their respective fields of the mainstream cinema at the Pune International Film Festival 2005 on 16 January.

Fifteen distinguished persons of Indian origin who have been living and working in different countries of the world have been selected by the Indian government for being honoured with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2005 for their achievements in different fields. Of these recipients of the award, three are Muslims viz Amina Cachalia from South Africa in the field of Public Affairs, Ahmad Kathrada also from South Africa for Public Affairs and Yusuffaly from United Arab Emirates for Business. 
Four brilliant girl students of Iqbal Memorial Girls Junior High School, Nagina ie Lubna Parveen, Tabassum Jahan, Sana Naheed and Rubina Parveen have been selected for Scout and Guide’s ‘Governor Award’. Principal of this school Ms Ghazala Parveen said that a 5-day selection camp of Bharat Scout and Guide for this award was held in Raja Jwala Prasad Girls Inter College.

Renowned Kashmiri poet, Ghulam Nabi Firaq has been honoured with Sahitya Academy’s award for the current year for his anthology of Kashmiri language poems ‘Sadat-e Sehrav’. He has been silently rendering service to literature specially Kashmiri language and literature for about half a century. He should in fact have been honoured with this award much earlier but in any case, it is better late than never.

Anjuman Islamia, an old religious institution of Kishan Ganj, Bihar recently held its annual day function. Famous journalist and editor of Hamara Parcham, Shamim Rabbani was honoured with an award in recognition of his long services to Urdu journalism. Shamim Rabbani is brining out the fortnightly journal Hamara Parcham for the past 35 years. He is also associated with Urdu daily ‘Inqilab Jadeed’ of Patna. «
