Muslim doctor to set up educational campus

By Abdul Hafiz Lakhani

The Milli Gazette Online

Ahmedabad: A five-year old boy, who braved the resentment of his orthodox family to take his first steps towards literacy from a small chawl in Gomtipur in Ahmedabad, has returned to his roots three decades later. Washington DC-based Dr Abdul Hasan Ansari is today all set to establish a multi-disciplinary school and college here.

Recently, Dr. Ansari finalised a deal for Iqra Educational Campus, which will spread across 40 acre of land near Shahwadi on the Sarkhej-Narol highway. Estimated to cost Rs 600 million, Dr. Ansari expects to start the construction in the near future.

"Taking cue from Syed Ahmad Khan’s AMU, I had nurtured a dream since my childhood to set up an educational institute here. IEC has been designed and programmed to incorporate a variety of disciplines and fields of knowledge. The co-educational campus will have a kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, and at a later stage, graduate and post-graduate curses in science, arts, commerce, business administration, computer applications and engineering disciplines", said Dr. Ansari who practices internal medicine in the US since 1979.

He insists that the IEC will not be a minority institution and will admit students irrespective of their religious backgrounds, while basic concepts of Islamic belief will be taught in the institution, non-Muslim students will be welcome to learn more about Islam, but will be exempt from these classes if they so desire", he asserts.

Dr. Ansari believes that although the project is too ambitious, it is not impossible to realise it. "When I was young, I thought that doctors came from heaven. Had this son of a poor mill-worker been pessimistic five decades back, he would never have become a doctor. Nothing is impossible if one is determined to reach his goal. As for this project, I can already see the outline. I know I will do it", he affirms.
