AP Muslims to get quota
Milli Gazette Online
Hyderabad: The path has been cleared for the extension of five per cent reservation in educational institutions and jobs to Muslim with Backward Classes Commission submitting its report to Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on June 14. Chairman of the Commission Justice D Subramanian said that after analyzing all the information and collecting the details about the socio-economic and educational status of Muslims the Commission has prepared an unanimous report. The commission has recommended five per cent reservations to the community.
The state government had constituted the commission last year after the AP High Court had asked the government to go through the commission in the matter of providing reservation to Muslims as a backward community. The Congress government soon after coming to power in 2004 had issued an order proving 5 percent reservation to Muslims in education and jobs fulfilling a key election promise. However, the order was challenged by the VHP and others in the High Court which struck it down and asked the government to constitute a commission and act on the basis of its report.
