Demand to make Urdu 2nd official language

New Delhi: All India National Educational Committee (NEC) has demanded Urdu to be made the second official language of the whole of India and to declare Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birth day as National Education Day. These demands were made at a special meeting of NEC’s executive committee held at Andhra Bhawan on 25 April ’05 under the presidentship of Jaleel Pasha, chairman and founder of All India National Educational Committee. Speakers in this meeting expressed their concern at central and state governments’ negligent and indifferent attitude towards Urdu and demanded declaration of Urdu as the second official language of the country.
The Committee has made an appeal to prime minister Manmohan Singh and Mrs Sonia Gandhi to direct Maharashtra government to give Urdu the status of second official language of the state and implement it strictly with immediate effect.
The Committee has also requested the Planning Commission to allocate an amount of Rs 100 crore for the promotion and popularisation of Urdu in the country. It has also demanded the setting up of Teachers Training Colleges, BEd College, Engineering College, Medial College, MBA, MCA institutions for Urdu knowing people together with facilities and arrangements for coaching for competitive examinations such as IAS, IFS and IPS in Urdu also. For this suitable facilities and publicity should be made so that Urdu knowing persons could benefit from these facilities.
It has also demanded that boy and girl students of Urdu medium primary, upper primary and high schools. Degree and P.G. College and students of boarding and residential schools should also be given scholarships as given to BC, SC and ST students.
The Committee has also demanded setting up of separate Urdu channels at national and state levels which would be helpful in bringing Urdu knowing people in the national stream and moulding public opinion so as to strengthen democracy and secularism. In addition to all this, demand has also been made to set up separate Urdu directorates in all states.
