Wockhardt launches 'Wosulin Pen'

The Milli Gazette Online

Mumbai: Indian pharmaceutical major Wockhardt has launched the country's first automatic insulin delivery device and recombinant insulin cartridge.
The third generation automatic device almost painless is customised for Indian patients, said the company chairman, Habil Khorakiwala in a release on February 16.

The company designed, developed and manufactured the pen-like device 'Wosulin Pen' which has a unique dial system enabling the detection of the right dose of insulin for the particular patient. The patient has to press an automatic plunger to deliver insulin just under the skin.

The device is like a normal pen and can be carried easily and its usage could be quite discreet. The pen device costs Rs 1,099 and the cartridge Rs 169, Khorakiwala said.

The company had launched the first recombinant insulin, wosulin about 18 months back and now the delivery device wosulin pen with the cartridge making it more affordable.

The pen, coloured in orange and green, underwent rigorous tests and has been certified under ISO 11608, Khorakiwala added.

Wockhardt has become the first company in India to design, develop, manufacture and market the high-techn insulin cartridges, the heart of the pen device, which makes insulin injection almost painless and more convenient.
Wosulin Pen has a unique dial system, which can select the right dose of insulin. Since it is like a normal pen, it can be carried easily and its usage could be quite discreet. It will be a boon for diabetic patients who are on the move," Khorakiwala said.

Wosulin cartridges are manufactured at the Wockhardt Biotech Park in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, which President A P J Abdul Kalam inaugurated in September 2004. Wockhardt has developed the high-technology rubber bung that enables injection of the exact amount of insulin required by the patient.
Wosulin Pen, using third generation technology, has been specially designed and manufactured for Wockhardt in the UK.

For the first time in India, Wockhardt has provided an instruction manual in 10 Indian languages but Urdu is not one of them. The dedicated website www.wockhardtdiabetic.com gives latest information on diabetes to Indian patients and their relatives in Indian languages, besides English.

Wockhardt Ltd is a technology-oriented pharmaceutical company and a front-runner in biotechnology. Wockhardt has an active multi-disciplinary research programme employing 400 scientists.
