New Delhi: National Integration Council was formed long back but after some time it was kept in cold storage and had virtually become non-existent. It was however reconstituted this month (February) after about 14 years.
The reconstituted National Integration Council (NIC) consists of more than a hundred prominent personalities representing all parts and all sections of the country. Prime minister Manmohan Singh is the chairman of NIC. Union cabinet ministers, chief ministers of states and Union territories, leaders of national political parties, representatives of news media, business community, prominent citizens of the country etc are members of this Council.
There are in all 18 Muslim members in this Council whose names are as follows:
Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union minister for Parliamentary affairs and Urban development, Dr Farooq Abdullah, former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Dr Rafiq Zakariya, Congress leader, Asghar Ali Engineer, reformist Bohra scholar, Bekal Utsahi, Urdu poet, Maulana Abdul Karim Parikh, religious leader and social worker, Justice A.M. Ahmadi, former chief justice of India, Dr Sayeda Hamid, Begum Noor Bano, former Congress MP from Rampur, Sahba Farooqi, Madari Moinuddin, Zahid Ali Khan, editor of Urdu daily Siyasat, Syed Muhammedali Shihab Thangal, Asaduddin Qwaisi, Navaid Hamid, M. Afzal, Moosa Raza, Ms. Shabnam Hashmi.
