Sania Mirza become the first Indian woman ever to win a WTA tour title in the USD 140,000 Hyderabad Open tennis on 12 February. The unseeded 18-year-old, backed by a vociferous crowd, held her nerve in a scintillating final match to beat ninth seed Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-4 5-7 6-3 at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh complex in Hyderabad. Sania was two years younger to her 102-ranked opponent. It was the third and final set which proved that the Hyderabadi lass has nerves of steel as she broke her opponent in the first, third and fifth games to race to a 5-1 lead. The rising star, who had earlier created history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the third round of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open last month, made full use of the opportunity.
Dr RashidullaH Khan was declared elected to the lone seat from Delhi for Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) election (2000) - 04 defeating his nearest rival, Dr Mohd Muqeem by a margin of 172 votes. The total number of votes cast were 1080 of which he secured 458 votes and Dr Muqeem secured 286 votes. Counting of votes was completed by 01 AM (9.2.05) after which Returning Officer, Ved Nand Kishore declared Dr Rashidulla Khan elected. There were 10 candidates for this seat. Dr Tasleem Rahmani received only one vote whereas Drs Adil Ameen, Jamal Zafar and M.B. Khan did not receive even a single vote.
Renowned poet, man of letters, critic Shamsur Rahman Farooqui has been appointed vice chairman of National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language in place of Prof Gopi Chand Narang who had resigned from this post long back. Prof Farooqi has written a number of books on poetry and prose. Born in Pratapgarh, UP he received his education at Azamgarh and Gorakhpur and Allahabad universities. He has been honoured with a number of literary awards including Saraswati Samman, Sahitya Academy Award, Bahadur Shah Zafar Award and other awards of UP and Bengal Urdu Academies and All India Meera Academy Award.
M Afzal, journalist, former MP and presently vice chairman of Urdu Academy, Delhi and Begum Noor Bano, former Congress MP from Rampur and presently a member of Congress Election Committee have been nominated members of National Integration Council which was revived after 14 years and reconstituted by the UPA government. The Council, headed by prime minister has scores of members from all parts of country, and represents all political parties, media, business community etc.
President of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee’s minority cell, Mohammad Jahangir has been appointed vice president of Jamiatul Ulama-e Hind’s Delhi unit.
Siraj Hussain IAS has just completed his tenure as Jamia Hamard vice chancellor with distinction. He had joined the university in March 2000. Under his leadership several new initiatives were taken by the university to achieve excellence in academics. He was instrumental in securing the minority status for the university. Husain joined the IAS in 1979 and has served in various positions in the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Before joining Hamdard University, he was posted as Managing Director of UP State Agro-Industries Corporation. Earlier as Managing Director of UP State Industrial Development Corporation, he set up a Software Technology Park in association with IIT Kanpur. He got a gateway also sanctioned by VSNL for the STP. He was also posted as Secretary to Government of UP in the departments of minority welfare and education. Several innovative schemes were initiated by him during these tenures for educational upliftment of educationally-backward minorities. He has been associated with several educational institutions in UP. In the Government of India, he worked for three years as Deputy Managing Director of the National Cooperative Development Corporation, which is the a national level funding agency for cooperatives in agri-business sector.«
