CBI to file closure report against Maya in Taj case
The
Milli Gazette Online
New Delhi: The CBI is set to close an FIR filed against former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati and seven others for their alleged involvement in the Rs 175 crore Taj Corridor scandal. The investigating agency will file a closure report in the case in a Lucknow court following Attorney General Milon Banerjee’s advice. Attorney General Banerjee has told the CBI that there was scope only for "departmental action" against the officials for irregularities in the project but there was no "criminal intent".
The CBI is also preparing to present a final report before the Supreme Court, stating that it does not have enough evidence to frame a case of criminal conspiracy against Mayawati and others named in the FIR filed in October 2003. The proposed closure of the case will, however, not affect the CBI’s investigation into corruption charges. Mayawati resigned as chief minister after the scandal and several of her key aides were suspended by the Mulayam Singh government.«
