Majority for NC in Srinagar civic polls, no clear mandate in Jammu
The
Milli Gazette Online
Srinagar: National Conference (NC) won a comfortable majority in the 68-member Srinagar municipal corporation by winning 41 seats. But no clear picture has emerged in Jammu municipal corporation. The results of the municipal polls were announced on February 2.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which did not have a significant presence in Srinnagar won 17 seats and its electoral ally Congress won six seats and Independents four.
NC chief Omar Abdullah has alleged that his party would have won more seats had the Mufti government not misused the official machinery. In Jammu municipal polls Congress and BJP had tied for 25 seats each. The BJP-Shiv Sena combine won 26 seats with BJP alone winning 25 seats. Congress won 25 seats, PDP two and NC six, BSP one and Independents nine. The Jammu results brought some cheer to the BJP after its poor performance in the last assembly elections.
