Help for stutters
Milli Gazette Online
I am both an Indo-American and a PWS (person who stutters) and would like to address an issue that effects the Indian community, both at home and abroad. Stuttering effects 1% of the worldwide adult population as well as about 4% of the child population. It does not discriminate in terms of race, religion, nationality or economic status. I recently read that the population of India is estimated at1,066,000,000; therefore there are 10,066,000 people who stutter in India; 1% of the Indian population abroad stutters as well.
Unfortunately, in my life I have been on the receiving end of numerous failed speech therapies. Finally, I am in a successful speech therapy and attaining fluency. I am writing this letter so that other people who stutter and their families can be helped like I have been.
The Stuttering Foundation of America (www.stutteringhelp.org) was founded in 1947 by Malcolm Fraser, the founder of the NAPA Auto Parts chain and a stutterer himself. It has helped countless people who stutter over the years. They provide free material for anyone who asks, and also offer a wide variety of books, videos and DVDs for both adult people who stutter and the parents of children who stutter. Recently the SFA mailed out an informative DVD on childhood stuttering that reached 55,000 paediatricians in the US. More importantly, the SFA website provides a listing of qualified speech therapists.
Stuttering has held me back in my profession, and presents many obstacles in life for those with the disability. I hope by your printing this letter that others in the Indo-American community can be helped by the resources offered by the Stuttering Foundation of America. Their e-mail is email@example.com; their website is www.stutteringhelp.com .
