Milli Gazette Online
New Delhi: A seminar on the theme "Aligarh Tehrik ki Nai Jehaten" was organised on March 22 here at Edward Said Hall, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi to discuss the need for a new direction to Aligarh Movement.
Aligarh Movement was started by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of AMU, Aligarh in the 19th century as a powerful and effective educational and cultural movement which had a far reaching impact on all walks of life. The movement was aimed at modernising the 19th century Muslim society which was facing challenges from the emerging Western/British culture in India.
Though the movement particularly addressed the Indian Muslims, it had impact on national life also. Sir Syed used the tools of modern education and scientific pursuits to fight against religious dogmatism and bigotry.
