Workshop on teaching of phonetics and spoken English

Aligarh: AMU’s Department of Linguistics organised a four-day workshop on teaching of phonetics and spoken English. Speaking during the inaugural session of the workshop Prof. RN Bakshi, Director, Central Institute of English and French languages, Lucknow, said that conflict between the use of mother tongue and English is not valid as English is only a complement of the mother tongues.

Prof. Bakshi emphasised the role of English in this era of globalisation and said that the demands of international business cannot be met without adequate knowledge of English. There is a need to use standard accent in order to be intelligible to the international community.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Farhatullah Khan of the Department of English, AMU, pointed out that our nation has wasted time, energy and resources in producing grammatically competent but communicatively incompetent teachers.

In the present era when non-native users of English have outnumbered the native users, there is a need to produce linguistically competent teachers as English today has become a language for survival, said Prof. Imtiaz.
School teachers from Aligarh and neighbouring districts attended the workshop.
