School textbooks: providing an alternative
Milli Gazette Online
For many years schools, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, have had to rely on textbooks produced either by foreign based companies with Eurocentric outlooks or official publications offering the latest version of politically correct views. Now, slowly, but steadily, Islamic Book Service is giving schools a more objective alternative with its textbook division, Angel International Publications.
The company's textbook division initially provided publications related to Islamic Studies, including their highly-successful "Studies in Islam," series and the Urdu-language Islami Taleemat, which were very well-received.
Bouyed by the textbooks' success in Muslim institutions, Angel International has been trying to broaden its reach into non-Muslim schools. It faces stiff competition from established booksellers, such as Macmillan, Oxford and Frank S. Chand, in this field, but through a comprehensive sales drive, sending samples to almost every school in Delhi and many across the country, it has been successful in winning clients. Its General Knowledge series has especially found many takers.
In expanding its reach, the company has stuck to its winning formula: quality production combined with factual contents in adherence to NCERT guidelines at competitive prices. The books are enlivened by colorful illustrations and eyecatching design. The company has also ventured abroad, establishing a presence in the United Arab Emirates, through its associate, Al Munna Book Service. There is a great demand for Indian textbooks in the UAE, which is witnessing an increasing expatriate presence and a growing number of schools following Indian curriculum.
