Mrs Abidah Inamdar, well-known social worker, educationist, former Senate member of Pune University, president of Deccan Muslim Institute and who is also associated with many national, state and local institutions and associations was honoured with the prestigious and unique ‘Savitri Bai Phule 2004-05 Award’ at a function held on 10 March at Pune’s Alp Bachat Sanskritik Sankal. The function was inaugurated by Dr Ashok Kolaskar, vice chancellor of Pune University and presided over by Joyce Shankaran, secretary in the ministry of higher secondary education. Speaking on this occasion, while congratulating the award winners, Dr Ashok Kolaskar said that all-round progress of the country is possible only when the services rendered by women at grassroot level are appreciated and also encouraged by our society. It may also be stated in this connection that the above awards were also given to five other women in addition to Mrs Abidah Inamdar. The award consists of a shawl, a memento and a cash prize of Rs 25,000.

It may be mentioned that Maharashtra government had started this award at state level in 1981 under which six women were honoured with this award each year for valuable social and educational services. It is interesting to note that Savitri Bai Phule belonged to a backward class community but most of the women to whom this award has been given so far belonged to Brahmin class. Savitri Bai’s movement for bringing about social and educational awakening and progress in society, especially among women, earned the wrath of Brahmins who always tried to create road blocks in her efforts. It is said that wherever she went, she kept an extra sari with her because at the prodding's of Brahmins, people very often used to throw mud and other dirts on her.

In 1848 she opened the first girls school in Bharewar locality of Poona in which her colleague and friend Fatema Bi greatly helped her. The result of her efforts can be seen today when the light of her torch of education is illuminating every corner not only of Pune but of Maharashtra also where women’s education is increasing fast.
