Idrees Qureshi, a 40-year old vegetable merchant and brother of UP’s minister of state for Haj and minorities affairs, Yaqoob Qureshi died in police custody on 22 May. DIG, Meerut, R.V. Vishwakarma said that it was a case of murder. Police has lodged an FIR againts an inspector and and four other policemen and they have been suspended. Twentyfive other policemen who were involved in the case are absconding. 

Luqman Mandal, a 11-month old son of Ganera Bibi who weighed 25 kgs died on 22 May in Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital after some food got stuck in his throat. Born in Mushirabad, he was taken to Kolkata for treatment of his abnormal weight. His daily diet was five litres of milk and one kg of powdered rice. His mother regrets bringing him to Kolkata because, she said that he was all right at home in Murshidabad. 

Ansari Murad Ali Rozan Ali, a freedom fighter died on May 7 in Bhiwandi, at a ripe age of 103 years. He worked in Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj as a soldier. He used to say that Netaji died in an air crash in Singapore in a forest which was so dense that the debris of the plane could not be taken. He always insisted that the news of Netaji’s being alive was false. 

Al Haj Basheer Ambalvi who was credited with compiling, writing, printing and publishing of Quranic documents and manuscripts weighing several hundred kilograms died recently in Lahore. He had demonstrated his art and skill in Saharanpur also. A condolence meeting was held in Saharanpur at the residence of Sufi Sayeed Sabri where rich tributes were paid to him. 

Munshi Neyazuddin, owner of Kutub Khana Anjuman Taraqqi-e Urdu, Jama Masjid died recently at his residence in Delhi. A condolence meeting was held at Urdu Ghar on 2 June under the presidentship of Dr Khaleeq Anjum where rich tributes were paid to him.«
