A handbook for clinical research in traditional medicine by Farah Ahmed and Ghazala Javed (pp.123, Delhi 2005) is a new and valuable addition to English on our traditional system of medicine. Few books are available on this topic outside Urdu.
Today, when the world is realizing today the importance of traditional medicine and going back to the traditional roots, this book comes as a boon. Authors have tried to make it simple and short, making it worthy of its name - a handbook. People doing research for documentation of time-tested traditional medicines, whether Unani, Ayurveda or Homeopathy, can easily plan and execute clinical trials with the help of this book. These clinical trials will be of uniform quality, according to the Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for doing research in traditional medicine, giving them credibility. The authors, who themselves have a background and expertise in clinical research in Unani System of Medicine, deserve appreciation for their effort. The book will be helpful to both specialists and laymen interested in traditional/herbal medicine.
