Delhi’s Ghalib Institute presented the Ghalib Awards 2004 to eminent Urdu and Persian litterateurs here on December 24. The Haryana Governor, AR Kidwai, conferred the Ghalib Award on
Sayyid Mohammad Aqeel, a former Urdu teacher for literary services rendered by him to Urdu;
Devender Assar for Urdu prose,
Mohammad Khalil for his contribution to science and Aziz Qureshi for Urdu drama. The vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia,
Prof. Mushirul Hasan addressing the gathering said that Ghalib Institute was bridging the geographical divide by providing a platform to Urdu and Persian scholars in United Kingdom, Pakistan and South Africa.
This year’s recipients of the annual prestigious scholarship awards of the Dr Moni Bhaumik Educational Foundation include
Prof Salman Khurshid, renowned poet and social, cultural and political personality of Bengal who worked for the uplift of Harijans and common man, was honoured with Shohood Alam Afaqi Award. This award, consisting of an Address of Welcome, a shawl and a memento was presented to him by Mrs Chhaya Bennerjee, local MLA on the occasion of AlI Bengal Mushaira sponsored by New Society Sports Club.
Prof Malikzada Manzoor Ahmad, famous poet and man of letters, was honoured with Maikash Akbarabadi Award 2004 at a literary function held at Agra on 19 December in which many renowned literary personalities, including Shahid Mahuli, director of Ghalib Institute, Delhi took part. This award consists of Rs 5 thousand in cash, a medal, a trophy and a Commendation Certificate. In his thanks giving speech, Prof Manzoor Ahmad said that Urdu is facing a decline after Independence and called upon the younger generation to protect and promote it so that the legacy of composite culture could be safeguarded.
Madhya Pradesh government’s cultural department unanimously decided to honour famous Urdu poet
Shaharyar with Iqbal Sammaan which carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a commendation certificate. In addition to him, the MP government has decided to honour Urdu poet and lyricist
Nida Fazli with a state level award for his contribution to Urdu literature.
Maulana Farid MazahIri, general secretary of Saharanpur’s Jamiatul Ulama Unit has been honoured with National Integration Award by Nagar Shanti Samiti and District administration. The award was presented to him by District Magistrate, Uma Dhar Dwivedi. Among those present on this occasion were former member of Minorities Commission, Maulana Mohd Ilyas (advocate) and others.
