Riot-tainted cop promoted, man who protested ignored
The
Milli Gazette Online
Ahmedabad: R B Sreekumar, whose affidavit and deposition before the Gujarat riots commission embarrassed Modi government last year has been superseded for promotion. While PC Pande, who was police commissioner of Ahmedabad during the Gujarat riots 2002 and who allegedly played negative role during the riots, has been promoted to Director General rank, and will take charge as director of the state Anti-Corruption Bureau. Pande is currently on deputation to the CISF. The Gujarat government promoted three of its four Addl DGs to DG rank and preferred to promote Sreekumar’s junior, KR Kaushik, over him. Sreekumar is from the 1971 batch while Kaushik is from the 1972 batch.
Sreekumar had told the Justice GT Nanavati and Justice KG Shah Inquiry Commission last year about lapses in dealing with the intelligence reports and that police force was unable to take action because of political interference.
When Pande was made CBI Addl. Director in 2003 his appointment snowballed into a controversy and petitions were filed in the Supreme Court against his appointment citing reasons that the agency was probing Gujarat riots. The central government had transferred him to the CISF last year.
