|Police atrocities on Muslims
Milli Gazette Online
Mubarakpur (Azamgarh): Muslims were made the target of police excesses on a minor incident which was given a communal colour in Devli Khalsa village of Mubarakpur on 10 February. While kerosene oil was being distributed among villagers on 10 February a minor clash took place between one Mohammad Jaish and some Dalits. According to Muslims the clash was initiated by Dalits. Mohammad Jaish sustained injuries in the clash and when he went to the police station to lodge a complaint, he was promised that his complaint would be registered but they neither registered the complaint nor he was medically examined. And the other Muslims who had gone to Mubarakpur police station to lodge a complaint were arrested under Harijan Act.
Dalits also lodged a complaint against Muslims. According to police version of the incident, Muslims were hiding in sugar cane and arhar fields and they attacked Dalit settlements with lathis and other weapons. In a one sided and partial action, the police raided Muslim settlements and let loose a reign of terror and adopted the same partial attitude against Muslims which they have normally been doing during riots. Muslims of this village are frightened and taking refuge in neighbouring villages with their relatives and friends.
Muslims are frightened because of the partial attitude of the police. Dalits after police prodding have become bold and started taunting and using filthy language against Muslims. One day, they forcibly entered the sugar cane field of one Shamsuddin and after reaping a good part fled with the booty. The police took no action against the culprits. Muslims of Devli Khalsa village as well as those of neighbouring villages are afraid but there is no one to hear their grievances and ensure their safety.
