There is a school in Dehradun which is devoted to the ideals and mission of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, founder of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Named after him, Sir Syed Public School, founded in July 2001 by Nafisul Hasan, has been spreading modern education among the Muslim community and other weaker sections of society.
The school has three ideals before it: imparting modern education to the children of underprivileged sections of society, women’s empowerment and communal harmony.
The school currently accommodates 150 students. Parents of the most of the students studying in the school are poor. The school provides free education to such students and gives them books, notebooks and uniforms without charging anything. Most of the parents of the students are illiterate. Teachers of the school get the homework of such students done under their supervision and enable them to face the examinations and secure good marks. The school has been teaching spoken English through Lingaphone in order to prepare the students to meet the challenges of the modern times. The cassettes of Lingaphone course are replayed before them and with the help of cartoon books they are asked to repeat the words and sentences.
Besides these, the school encourages students in many other ways. Those obtaining highest marks are given prizes. The school provides scholarships to talented but poor students. It set up a library in 2004 and plans to open it for the students of other schools in the area also.
There was no centre for the recognized Urdu courses in Dehradun. In 2003, the school succeeded in opening a centre of Urdu courses of Jamia Urdu Aligarh. In 2003-2004, 60 students took admission to these courses, most of the students came from rural areas. Poor students were exempted from paying admission fees. From academic year 2004-05, the school was allowed to conduct examinations for Urdu Muallim courses too.
In 2003, the school opened Sir Syed Adult Education and Training Centre and gave training of making candles, stitching, embroidery and applying menhdi to poor women. Those who completed their course were given certificates.
The school has also rendered services in maintaining communal harmony in society. Teachers and students of the school belong to different religions and castes but live as a family. Poor students are given financial assistance on the basis of their talent and not their religion or caste. There are instances of Hindus helping Muslim students and Muslims helping Hindu students of the school.
