Modi vs Sreekumar - Pandora's box
By Abdul Hafiz Lakhani
The
Milli Gazette Online
Ahmedabad: The UPA government’s decision to probe into the allegations levelled by Additional DGP RB Sree Kumar against Gujarat CM Narendara Modi by the CBI could open a
Pandora’s box that could put the Modi government on the mat.
Sources said that the probe could also lend credence to the demands for CBI inquiry into some of the major riot cases including Godhra carnage as demanded in the petitions filed before the Supreme Cour.t in 2002.
There are also indications that if Sree Kumar is questioned he may part with more classified information supported with evidence that could bring more officials and politicians under the scanner.
Though the UPA government is not yet certain how it would probe into the allegations but one thing is clear that the diary of Sree Kumar chronicling informal orders and discussions in official meetings by the former intelligence chief of the state has become the most legitimate ground for the center to interrogate Modi and his bureaucrats on the controversial riots.
The CBI officials said that they had no idea how the probe is going to be conducted on mere allegations levelled by an IPS officer. Ideally a CBI probe is possible only with sanction of the state government
because the probe is conducted under the directions of the Supreme Court or a High Court.
But it is certain that Modi would never allow a probe on his own role or the role of his government, so the strategy will have to be worked out carefully, said sources. Congress leaders are concerned about the
seriousness of the matter and recall how days after the diary became public, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his speech to IAS probationers said that a Gujarat should not happen anywhere again.
In Gandhinagar, a few ministers loyal to Modi are prodding him to take action against Sree Kumar because of fear that more IPS officers could get bolder and speak out against him and his government. Questions are being raised as to how Sree Kumar annexed documents marked ‘secret’ with his affidavits before the Nanavati-Shah commission.
