Mushawarat
Appeals to People of UP to Force SP, BSP and Congress to Form Coalition
Government
Calls the Secular MLAs of BSP to ‘Rebel’, if Leadership Joins Hands
with BJP
Requests Governor Immediately to Invite SP, the Biggest Party to Form
Government
New Delhi, 25 February, 2002: Mr Syed Shahabuddin, President of the
All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following
Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) offers its
sincere felicitation to the people of UP for voting out the BJP
Government and reducing its strength in the newly elected Assembly to a
double-digit. However, it notes with regret the low turn out and the
division of secular votes in many constituencies, which led to the
victory of the BJP and its allies and therefore deplores the fact that
the SP, the BSP and the Congress did not rise above partisan politics,
and form a Secular Alliance which would have effortlessly led to the
formation of a secular government in UP.
The AIMMM, therefore, appeals to the secular people of UP to complete
the unfinished agenda by forcing the three secular parties to form a
coalition government and defeat the BJP end-game.
In particular, the AIMMM cautions the BSP against aligning with the BJP,
whatever the rewards, in violation of its pre-election pledge and the
proven aspirations of the people of the state. The AIMMM is of the view
that in case the BSP leadership decides to join a BJP-led government or
form a government with the support of the BJP, the newly elected MLA of
the party will be morally justified to split the party and extend
support to the anti-BJP alliance.
At this critical juncture, the AIMMM also appeals to the Governor of UP
to follow the accepted procedure and invite the leader of the biggest
party to form the Government and seek the vote of confidence of the
Assembly within a reasonable period."
