Mushawarat Demands Urgent Action by Central Government

New Delhi, 1 March, 2002: Mr Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:

"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) strongly condemn the planned, organized and systematic massacre of innocent Muslims and destruction of their properties across Gujarat, the model state of ‘Hindu Rashtravad’, in a savage display of ‘Hindutva Shakti’ with State police serving as no more than mute spectator and even as collaborator.

The AIMMM holds the State Government wholly responsible for the tragic event of 28 February, 2002, which could and should have been anticipated and contained by effective preventive measures.

It is forced to the conclusion that the State Government allowed the fire to spread through criminal negligence.

In the event the AIMMM demands the immediate dismissal of State Government, promulgation of President’s Rule and deployment of the Army to restore law and order."
