Mushawarat Appeals to BSP MLA’s in UP to Disown Power-Hungry Leadership

New Delhi, 10 April, 2002
: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:

"The AIMMM recalls that the BSP-led contested the UP Assembly Elections on a secular programme and had adopted a clearly anti-BJP stand. Its legitimate aspiration was to emerge with a working majority so as to be in a position to form the Government. In the event it came out third with 98 MLAs, including 14 Muslims.

The AIMMM, as well as other Muslim organizations, had endorsed its candidates in the Constituencies which it held and also in Muslim concentration constituencies in which it was the only party to put up Muslim candidates. In a view of its past record, the AIMMM had called upon the electorate to vote for the BSP candidate, only if he or she pledged that he/she would not help the BJP to form a Government.

The AIMMM has taken note of the on-going negotiations between the BJP and the BSP for the formation of a Government in UP, though the terms are yet to be decided. It is not known whether it shall be a coalition Government or a BSP Government with BJP’s support or a BJP Government with BSP’s support. Whatever the form and composition, it shall be a Government totally dependent on the support of the BJP and will dance to the tune of the Sangh Parivar.

The AIMMM denounces these negotiations as immoral and unethical, directed against the secular order and motivated by political opportunism.

The Delhi Municipal Elections have shown how the electorate reacts to opportunistic moves. The AIMMM considers that timely separation from the unprincipled politics of the BSP leadership will ensure a future for those MLA’s, who have the courage to resist being treated like lifeless counters for political bargaining.

The AIMMM, therefore, calls upon the BSP MLA’s to rebel against the unprincipled opportunistic move by the leadership of their party and advises the electorate to boycott, those, who do not line, socially."
