Muslims Notables Meet President: Urge Central Rule and Change of Governor and Implementation of NHRC and NCM’s Recommendations

New Delhi, 29 April, 2002: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:

"A Delegation of Muslim notables called on the President today to request him that in exercise of his Constitutional authority under Article 78 of the Constitution, he may call for status report on the situation in Gujarat, in order to examine the basic reasons for delay in restoration of normalcy and advise the Prime Minister that in order to restore the confidence of the target community and normalcy in the State, the Governor should be changed and the State placed under the Central Rule with a new Governor assisted by advisers of national eminence, charged with implementation of the relief and rehabilitation package and the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Minorities, expediting investigation and prosecution with the assistance of the CBI and establishing a new Commission of Inquiry with a sitting Judge of the Supreme Court and 2 sitting Judges of the High Court with proper terms of reference.

The Delegation presented a Memorandum to the President. The President listened to them with sympathy, expressed his anguish over the prolonged violence in Gujarat and promised to speak to the Prime Minister.
