Joint Statement

Condemning attack and killing of innocent civilians by terrorists in Jammu

New Delhi, May 14, 2002: We representing various organizations strongly condemn the terrorist attack in Jammu today, which targeted innocents including women and children, resulting in the tragic deaths and injuries to many.

Although the perpetrators of this barbaric act have been killed it is not enough retribution for this enormous tragedy. It is essential to reach the root cause of this continuing scourge, which has over the years taken a toll of thousands of innocent lives.

Our hearts go out to the family members who have suffered this terrible loss. Our thoughts are also with those who have been injured and lying in the hospital. We call upon the government to immediately ensure that the guilty are identified and punished. Innocents should not be hounded and made scapegoats as has been done in the past.

Understanding the nefarious designs of these perpetrators to divide people and cause communal disharmony, we call upon people all over the country to defeat this plot and assert their unity.
