AIMMM Letter to Home Minister Advani

12 June, 2002

My dear Advaniji,

According to the report in the Hindustan Times, New Delhi, 6 June, 2002, the IB has prepared a Report on unregistered Madarsas in the country and submitted it to the Home Ministry. It has recommended a Central legislation to curb establishment of Madarsas and regulate construction of Masjids.

It is also stated to have cited instances of misuse of Madarsas for subversive purposes e.g. “storage of arms, ammunition and explosives and recruitment of youth for terrorist outfits”.

The allegations are not new. The propaganda against Islamic institutions of Masjids and Madarsas is going on for quite some time. We have on several occasions requested you that such propaganda only feeds the hate campaign Muslims, creates distrust and generates violence against the community and terrorises it into abandoning their religious rights. We have also suggested to you that the Government should take action under the law of the land against those, if any, who misuse Madarsas or Masjids. We are not aware of the action taken.

We would, therefore, like to know the particulars of the Madarsas and Masjids which are being ‘misused’ and the names of those against whom the legal action has been taken. Indeed we request you to publish it.

With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

Syed Shahabuddin
