Relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the Gujarat carnage
New Delhi, 26 June, 2002: Mr GM Banatwalla, MP, National President, Indian Union Muslims League, has written to the Prime Minister that the Gujarat Government is negligent and unsympathetic in the work of relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the Gujarat carnage. He has urged upon Vajpayeeje to heed to the cries of justice of the victims. In his letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Banatwalla has said, "while I strongly believe that justice will continue to clued them (the victims) till the present state regime is removed and the President rule is imposed, I urge upon you at least to issue due instructions to the State Government under article 355 and to set up a central mechanism to monitor the relief and rehabilitation work.
Mr Banatwalla has pointed out that the quantum of financial assistance to the houseless to construct shelter is ridiculously low. Even this pittance, many have not yt received. The relief camps with adequate government relief need to be continued till refugees have shelter to which they can return. Due security will also have to be provided at their homes in villages. Those who try to return to their villages also face social and economic boycott. Mr Banatwalla has also stressed on occupational rehabilitation.
Mr Banatwalla has stated that "the victims are doubly distressed. Having faced the most inhuman communal violence, they are now a complete wreck under the pathetically slow, inadequate and inhuman process and quantum of relief and rehabilitation assistance." The poor victims are forced to knock at the doors of the court and have to plan a ‘dharna’ even in Delhi on 27 June.
Mr Banatwalla has demanded that the relief and rehabilitation must be on the scale provided to the victims on the ghastly occasion of anti-Sikh violence in Delhi in 1985.
