Mushawarat Expresses Indignation and Sorrow at the Attacks on Amarnath Pilgrims in Jammu & Kashmir

Calls upon Government to make Foolproof Security Arrangements for the Yatra

New Delhi, 8 August, 2002: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:

"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) expresses its deep indignation and sorrow at the repeated attacks on Amarnath pilgrims in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Such an assault on religious freedom is simply unacceptable in the civilized world today and serves only to underline the fanatical character of the militancy in the State.

Such a militancy does not deserve to receive any sympathy for any section of the people as it raises hostility and anger of the people in the rest of India and brings the people of the State a bad name all over the world. It is the duty of the All Party Hurriyat Conference not only to condemn such terrorist acts but to expose the organizations concerned and the forces behind them.

The AIMMM conveys its condolences to the next-of-kin of the people who have lost their lives and calls upon the Government to make foolproof security arrangements for the completion of the Yatra."
