MUSLIM MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
Mushawarat Appreciates Stand of Election Commission On Assembly Election in Gujarat
Requests Election Commission to Monitor Situation to Ensure Electoral Environment free from Fear & Intimidation
Demands Ban on VHP & Bajrang Dal and Presidents' Rule in Gujarat
New Delhi, 19 August, 2002: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat
(AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The AIMMM expresses its deep appreciation for the objective stand taken by the Election Commission of India on Assembly Election in Gujarat, despite the unseemly pressure openly applied by the BJP and the Central and State Governments.
The AIMMM proposes that the Election Commission should closely and regularly monitor the situation in the State to ensure that due progress is made in relief and rehabilitation of the victims as well as in investigation and prosecution of the culprits so that public order is fully restored and the entire electorate develops confidence to participate in the electoral process in an atmosphere, free from fear and intimidation.
The AIMMM demands a ban on the VHP and the Bajrang Dal in the State as well as appeals to all political parties, including the BJP in particular, not to indulge in a communally divisive election campaign or to incite the voters in the name of religion.
The AIMMM also demands imposition of punitive fines on the villages whose residents obstruct the return of the displaced to their homes or harass them on return.
The AIMMM is of the view that the acting C.M. Narendra Modi is the biggest single obstacle to restoration of normalcy and, therefore, reiterates its earlier request to the Central Government to dismiss the State Government immediately, place the State under President's rule, change the Governor and appoint competent advisors of national eminence to assist the new Governor."
