MUSLIM MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
Mushawarat Appeals to the People of J&K to defeat the NC and the BJP
in the Coming Elections
Calls upon Union Government to enter into Negotiations with all
PoliticalForces in the State for Durable and Equitable Solution
New Delhi, 13 September, 2002: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of
the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the
following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) sees the coming
election to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly as a constitutional
imperative and an opportunity for the people to play their due role in
the formation of a Government which is responsive to their problems and
thus enlarge the area of good governance. Several recognized national
and state parties as well as independents are contesting the elections.
The AIMMM does not see the election as a solution of the Kashmir problem
and has always been of the view that a durable and equitable solution
can be reached only through negotiations with the entire political
spectrum, whether represented in the Legislature or otherwise.
In the overall national perspective, the AIMMM considers that the Sangh
Parivar and its political front the BJP represent an anti-secular
mindset and promote a divisive ideology whose latest manifestation was
the genocidal carnage in Gujarat. It is, therefore, regrettable that the
J&K National Conference, the major political party in the State,
clings to the membership of the BJP-dominated NDA and that its President
is the Minister of State in the NDA Government at the Centre.
In accordance with its longstanding policy, the AIMMM, therefore,
appeals to the voters in J&K to defeat the candidates of the
National Conference, the BJP, and the other parties which form part of
the NDA as well as the RSS-led Front in Jammu and vote in every
constituency unitedly for the strongest
candidate who is in a position to defeat them.
The AIMMM considers that no election can be free and fair in an
environment of violence and coercion and appeals to all concerned to
maintain peace.
The AIMMM expresses its fervent hope that though much valuable time has
been lost the Union Government shall enter into unconditional dialogue
with all political forces in the State, without any further delay, as
soon as the elections are over."
