AMC Condemns Attack on Temple in India
WASHINGTON, DC, Sept 24, 2002:
The American Muslim Council (AMC)
condemns an attack on a temple in New Delhi, India, in which 29 people
were killed. According to a report gunmen stormed a Hindu temple complex in
India's western Gujarat state on Tuesday, killing 29 people and
wounding many more as they opened fire on pilgrims inside.
In the state of Gujarat where thousands of Muslims were burnt alive in
sectarian violence, the attack on Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar,
capital of the state, worsens an already tense atmosphere in the
state. AMC urges the government of India to quickly apprehend the
culprits and make sure that anti-Muslim forces in the state do not
use this unfortunate incident as a pretext for violence against the
Muslim population.
AMC, the senior Muslim political organization in the United States,
was established in 1990 to increase America's seven million Muslims'
effective participation in the U.S. political and public policy
arenas. AMC has played a key role in political advocacy for American
Muslims throughout the 1990s, initiating many of the historic events
marking the entrance of Muslims into mainstream American culture and
life.
