AIMMM Appeals to Secular Parties to Forge Electoral Understanding
Appeals to Voters to Save Gujarat Today and to Save India Tomorrow by Voting for
Strongest Secular Candidate in every Constituency
New Delhi, 3 December, 2002: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) considers the ensuing Assembly election in Gujarat as critical for the future of the secular order in the country.
The AIMMM notes with regret the division in secular ranks and appeals to the secular parties to come to an electoral understanding, even at this late hour.
The AIMMM calls upon to the voters also to ensure that the secular vote is not divided and to vote in every Constituency, unitedly and massively, for the strongest secular candidate.
The AIMMM knows that with the exception of misguided and fanatic fringe, the people of Gujarat believe in religious tolerance and have practised harmonious co-existence over the ages. It appeals to the people of Gujarat to rise above mutual suspicion and distrust in this critical election. The secular conscience of the Gujarati people must prevail in order to save Gujarat today and to save India tomorrow."
