MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER ON MUSLIM STAND OVER GODHRA CARNAGE
New Delhi, 20 December, 2002: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has addressed a letter to the Prime Minister on 19 December, 2002 on his statement on Godhra Carnage.
In view of the public importance, the text of the letter is released to the press:
TEXT OF THE LETTER
"We are shocked and surprised by your statement that the Muslim community did not and has not yet condemned the Godhra Carnage. Either you are ill-informed or you have deliberately adopted the language of Shri Narendra Modi and Shri Parveen Togadia. In the wake of the Godhra tragedy, for the first time, leaders of practically all nationally eminent Muslim organizations issued a joint statement on 28 February, 2002, which was carried by many national papers. We wonder how your staff did not draw your attention to it. I am enclosing a copy for your information.
May I also inform you that in Godhra itself the leading members of the community held a meeting and issued a joint statement on the day of the tragedy itself? The people of India, however, want to know why the Godhra outrage was not condemned by the Lok Sabha on the 28 February, 2002 why, as the Prime Minister and Leader of the House you did not introduce a Resolution which would have been passed unanimously. Such a Resolution would have extinguish the fires of revenge and retaliation which had been already started by the VHP with the support of the State BJP and the Chief Minister.
In any case, we respectfully request you not to say anything which would incite the Hindu masses against the Muslim community, particularly not to repeat your misinformation about Godhra. We hope you do not share Shri Togadia's and Shri Singhal's determination to repeat the Gujarat
experiment all over the country. After all you are the Prime Minister of all of us."
