MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
With Arrest of Husain Umarji Gujarat Enters Second Phase of Persecution of Muslims;
Mushawarat Demands Intervention by Prime Minister and Home Minister for his Immediate Release
New Delhi, 7 February, 2003: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following
Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) strongly protests against the arrest on 6 February, 2003 of the most eminent Muslim and one of the noblest citizens of Godhra, Mr. Husain Umarji who served the community during the genocidal carnage as its interlocutor with all visiting dignitaries including the Prime Minister, the Chairman of the NHRC, former PM H. D. Deve Gowda and Defence Minister George Fernandes. Mr. Umarji, the Chairman of the Panchamal Relief Committee, has played the key role in emergency humanitarian relief as well as rehabilitation of the hundred of bereaved and uprooted families. Mr. Umarji is not an Imam or mutawalli of any Masjid; he is a leading businessman.
The AIMMM expresses its deep sense of shock at his arrest on the basis of an obviously false statement, concocted by the police, attributed to a history-sheeter in its detention, charged in scores of criminal cases, even without seeking his comments in a civilized manner.
The AIMMM considers it as beginning of the second phase of the State Government's persecution of the Muslim community, whose objective is the terrorization of the community and the suspension of all self-help by the community for relief and rehabilitation and prosecution of the culprits.
The AIMMM is also surprised by the manner in which the media has reported the arrest of Mr. Umarji, as a 'key accused', as if he had been absconding for the last one year and the police had finally caught up with him!
The AIMMM requests the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to intervene in the matter for his immediate release, in order to restore the shattered confidence of the community in the judicial process."
